History
From 38 students to a nationally respected institution.
A new beginning
Dr Bidhan Chandra Roy, then Chief Minister of West Bengal, invited the Ramakrishna Mission to establish an educational institution in the newly formed district of Purulia.
The site is chosen
The Mission selected a site at Bongabari village, now known as Vivekananda Nagar, for Ramakrishna Mission Vidyapith.
A residential school
Vidyapith began as a residential Higher Secondary Multipurpose School with 38 Class IX students and streams in Science, Technology and Humanities.
Steady expansion
Fine Arts was added in 1959, Agriculture in 1961, and Classes IV through VIII in 1964. By then, enrolment had reached 316.
Education is restructured
The old Class XI Higher Secondary course ended as the school moved to Madhyamik education and then adopted the 10+2 pattern.
Higher Secondary returns
Higher Secondary education was reintroduced with science subjects including Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Statistics and Computer Science.
Humanities is added
The school broadened its Higher Secondary programme with a Humanities stream covering languages, social sciences, philosophy, visual arts and music.
The official history records Vidyapith's recognition by the Government of India as a Model School and credits its development and all-India character to the vision of its founder-secretary and his co-workers.
Founder-secretary
Swami Hiranmayananda
1909–2001
A monk remembered for wide vision, tireless energy, scholarship and a generous heart.
Born Vijayananda Roy at Malda in 1909, he was initiated by Swami Shivananda in 1929, joined the Ramakrishna Order at Belur Math in 1933 and received sannyasa from Swami Virajananda in 1943.
He served at several centres of the Order and led centres including Rangoon Sevashrama, Deoghar, Vrindaban, Baghbazar, Bombay and Delhi. As founder-secretary of the Purulia centre, he guided Vidyapith through its formative years.
He became a Trustee in 1973 and served as General Secretary of the Ramakrishna Order from April 1985 to February 1989. A scholar of Sanskrit, Bengali and English literature, he also authored a number of well-received books.
Swami Hiranmayananda passed away on 18 May 2001 at the age of 92, leaving an enduring educational and spiritual legacy.
